dc.description.abstract A low frequency relationship between the number of Tropical cyclones over the western North Pacific and sea surface temperature in the tropical Pacific during the main tropical cyclone season (June-July-August-September-October) are analyzed in observations for the period of 1965-2006. Here we show that the decadal variations are readily apparent in the relationship between the variability of tropical cyclone activity and the sea surface temperature variations, in particular, significant change around the early 1990s is detected. During the 1980s the tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific more frequently occurred in a La Nina-like mean state condition, in contrast, after the early 1990s the tropical cyclones more frequently occurred in an El Nino-like mean state condition. It is found that an El Nino-like mean state results in the eastward shift of mean genesis location of TCs and a La Nina-like mean state results in the northwestward shift of mean genesis location of TCs. -
