dc.description.abstract The Korea/Tsushima strait is the primary inlet of seawater and advected heat into the East/Japan Sea. This survey area is very famous study area on global climate exchange due to time series data in the world. Until recently, however, most of all studies in this area were focused physical oceanographic investigation including international collaboration work on the East/Japan Sea. Thus, the studies of Korea Strait were rarely focused on its distribution of nutrient and biological aspects and were very poor at interaction between physic-chemical environmental factors and phytoplankton population because it was regarded as oligotrophic. However the dissolved organic carbon resulting from the growth of phytoplankton is transported by Tsushima Current to the oligotrophic water in Ulleung Basin of East/Japan Sea. Although the impact of phytoplankton bloom in the western channel of Korea Strait on ecological aspects to East/Japan Sea is not known, this input of organic carbon should act as important source for primary production in oligotrophic water in East/Japan Sea. Thus, it is important to understand spatial and temporal distribution of inorganic nutrients and composition of phytoplankton in the western channel of Korea Strait. Nutrients often have major regulatory effects on phytoplankton abundance and composition. Previous studies have demonstrated that nitrogen, phosphorus silica and the ratio of nutrients may limit phytoplankton abundance and determine the dominant phytoplankters. Spatial and temporal distribution of inorganic nutrients and composition of phytoplankton in the western channel of Korea Strait mainly have several key point. Firstly, the rich nutrient input at water column mixing due to weakening of thermocline causes the growth of diatom in winter and spring time. Secondary, nutrients regeneration occur from the bottom due to organic matter decomposed by aerobic bacteria. However, nutrients are not supplied to photic zone due to thermocline. As a res -
