dc.description.abstract The grid-net system estimating the electrical conductivity changes was evaluated as a potential detection system for the leakage of landfill leachate. Pilot-scale field model tests were performed to evaluate the direct application of a grid-net electrical conductivity measurement system for the detection of landfill leachate. A significant increase in electrical conductivity of soil was observed by adding landfill leachate. In pilot-scale field model tests, leachate intrusion locations were accurately identified at the initial stage of landfill leachate release by the grid-net electrical conductivity measurement system. The electrical conductivity values in detected points were approximately 10 times more than the conductivity values of the subsurface without landfill leachate leakage. In addition, electrical conductivity breakthrough curves and concentration breakthrough curves were simultaneously obtained in column experiment. These results indicated that electrical conductivity measurement can be an effective means of detecting contaminant transport through soil-bentonite compacted liner and verifying possible contaminant leakage. Experimental results obtained from this study showed that the electrical conductivity measurement can be a promising tool for detecting contaminant leakage at landfill liner system. -
