dc.description.abstract | Major issue regarding coastal water pollution has been usually recognized as phytoplankton blooms or red tides caused by eutrophication, an increase in concentrations of inorganic nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. However, in order to understand the effects of the overall pollution on marine ecosystems, the organic pollutants as well as the inorganic nutrients should also be considered. The microbial communities of heterotrophic bacteria (HB), heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and ciliates among the planktonic organisms should be also focused to clarify the effect of the organic pollution. A pilot study was conducted to develop a biological tool for the water quality evaluation in Jinhae Bay, Korea. The relationships between phytoplankton (chlorophyll a and harmful algal species: HAS) and inorganic nutrients (nitrogenous nutrients: DIN and phosphate) to understand the effects of inorganic pollution on planktonic organisms were investigated. Major components of microbial loop, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), HB, HNF, and ciliates were simultaneously analyzed. The spatial distribution of DIN, chl. a, and HAS displayed the similar pattern with a strong correlation, which indicated the increase toward Masan Bay (the inner channel of Jinhae Bay). In a same trend, higher DOC concentration and densities of three heterotrophic planktons (HB, HNF, and ciliates) were observed in the inner area of Masan Bay. Six indicators (DIN, chl. a., and HAS for the inorganic pollution and DOC, HB, and HNF for the organic pollution) were selected and then applied on the assessment of coastal ecosystem health in Jinhae Bay. The assessment result was easily expressed and clearly graded by the integration of standard score (Z-score) for each indicator. The new approach using the plankton communities is tentatively presented as a biological tool for assessing the ecosystem health of coastal water. | - |
