dc.description.abstract An experiment was conducted to investigate compensatory growth of selected (initial mean BW; 80.2±0.3 g) and non-selected (initial mean BW; 61.5±0.2 g) strain of red sea bream Pagrus major at 25℃ for 9 weeks to examine the growth trajectory during recovery from feed deprivation. Fish were fed by a commercial feed to satiation twice a day. Fish of each strain were divided four feeding groups; one group with continuous feeding (selected, SC; non-selected, NSC) and three other groups with feed deprivation for 1 week (selected, SF1; non-selected, NSF1), 2 weeks (selected, SF2; non-selected, NSF2) and 3 weeks (selected, SF3; non-selected, NSF3), respectively. All feeding groups were five replicates. All fasted fish resumed feeding in week 4. Changes of body weight, specific growth rate, feeding rate and feed conversion efficiency were examined every 3 weeks during the re-feeding period. The complete compensation growth of selected strain and non-selected occurred after re-feeding for 3 weeks in SF1 and SF2 groups and for 6 weeks in SF3, NSF1 and NSF2 groups, respectively. Although the specific growth rate of fish in NSF3 group was higher than that in the control fish after re-feeding, NSF3 fish did not reached the same body weight of the control fish at the end experiment. The feeding rates and feed conversion efficiencies of all starved fish were greater than those of control fish, but the values of selected strain were higher than those of non-selected strain. Our results indicate that the original growth trajectory in selected strain is faster than that in non-selected strain of red sea bream due to higher specific growth rate, feeding intake and feed conversion efficiency. -
