dc.description.abstract Concentration values and distribution patterns of Suspended Sediment (SS) play an important role in dealing with marine environmental change monitoring (especially coastal area). These are fundamental to assess the accumulation rate and moving path of SS (KORDI report, 1999). Saemangeum area is located in the middle part of the Yellow Sea in South Korea. This place is known for the construction of Saemangeum tide embankment of about 33 km long. The construction was started in November 1991 and completed in April 2007. As a result, the SS concentrations and distribution patterns in this area have been variously changed and consequently there will be significant changes in its coastal and marine environment anticipated. The Median Resolution Sensors (MRSs) for land observation such as Landsat-TM/ETM+ and SPOT-HRV are more effective than the Ocean Color Sensors (OCSs) for studying the SS distribution patterns in coastal waters. In accordance with the necessity, we processed the time series Landsat imageries from 1985 to 2007. To get the SS concentration information from these Landsat imageries we used an empirical algorithm which has been previously developed by Min et al (2006). In the west part of 3rd & 4th dyke, lower SS concentrations appeared after closing the floodgate. On the contrary, 1st & 2nd dyke have 2 floodgates. Therefore, the west part of 1st & 2nd dyke appeared to have high SS concentrations because of the influence from inner part. As a whole, compared with that before construction, total SS amount around the dyke was remarkably decreased, but the northern and southern parts of Saemangeum area showed the increasing trend in SS concentrations. It is likely due to the effect of tidal currents. -
