Abstract
The composition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of sediment and oyster were studied in western coast of Korea from 2003 to 2004. The objectives of this study were to examine the relationship between the composition of PAHs and oysters’ habitat. The two different species (Crassotrea gigas and Ostrea gigas. shikame) of oysters were collected in water column and sediment. Concentrations of tPAHs in oyster ranged from 49.43 ng/g dw to 201.29ng/g dw. The low molecularweight PAHs (LMW PAHs) such as MW178 and MW202 were relatively dominant in sediment dwelling oyster. While high molecular weight PAHs (HMW PAHs) over the MW 228 was relatively dominant in the composition of PAHs in oyster on rocky shore. Because PAHs are generally adhered to organic particles for hydrophobicity , and particularly HMW PAHs has higher log Kow than LMWPAHs, HMW PAHs can be easilyl adhered to particles in seawater. Therefore, oysters on rocky shore should accumulate preferentially HMW PAHs. In this study, the composition of PAHs molecular weight in oysters was distinguished by their habitat environment regardless of species difference.
