dc.description.abstract Residual sea levels include many useful ocean signals (Kang et al., 2005; Kang et al., 2008) and especially those data are especially useful in understanding the thermal energy or ocean heat content of the water column in summer, which is an important indicator as a potential heat supply to the approaching typhoon. The explicit comparison between altimeter data and in situ data is made around the time of the typhoon passage in order to evaluate the contribution of upper mixed layer and total water column. In situ data cover the field survey CTD and Argo data before and after typhoon’s passage, especially in 2007 typhoon Nari. This can be also applied for understanding the contribution of thermosteric effect in the mean sea level rising rate, as done in Kang et al. (2005). The residual values without tidal signal are extracted from tidal analysis of the satellite data such as Topex/Poseidon and Jason data, which are compared with other set of data, that is, steric or thermosteric data from CTD casting and other kinds of in situ data such as ARGO profile data available in the East Asian marginal seas. The effect of seasonal variation component is also evaluated and the upper layer contribution to the residual sea levels is estimated. Through this procedure we expect that the explicit quantification of residual sea surface height can be evaluated and the change of residual surface can be interpreted in terms of the change of heat anomaly for the typhoon period during summer season. -
