dc.description.abstract It is investigated how the mixed layer deepening during winter is determined in the North Pacific, using the SODA data set. The increase of the mixed layer depth during Oct. to Feb. is compared with the estimated MLD increases by nonpenetrative convective deepening from the surface cooling. The difference is found to be attributed mainly to the heat flux to the mixed layer by horizontal advection, due to both Ekman transport and geostrophic flow. -
