Abstract
Macrobenthos in the sandy tidal flat were collected and compared to those of the previousdata to assess the oil impact on macrobenthic community. A total of 144 macrobenthic faunawere collected, and the mean density of the macrobenthic fauna were 971 ind./㎡ and 871 ind./㎡ in January and April, 2008, and the mean biomass were 206.7 gWWt/㎡ in January and 187.3gWWt/㎡ in April, 2008. Polychaetes decreased from January to April, but Mollusca increased.The density of Crustacea decreased from January to April, but no differed in other taxa. Insites 2 and 3 with heavy oil pollution the number of species was very lower (two - four folds)than that of similar habitats. Density of macrobenthic fauna in site 3 was very low anddiversity also low in this site. Dominant species,Felaniella sowerbyi, Umbonium thomasi,Haustorioides indivisus, Eohaustorius spinigerus, Urothoe grimaldii japonica, ocuurred in verylow in sites 2 and 3. The indicator for organic pollution, Capitella capitata, increased in site 7after oil pollution. Cluster analysis showed that the macrobenthic community in site 3 differedcomparing to other sites. The macrobenthic communities in sites 2 and 3 showed very instableconditions. After oil pollution, the number of species and density of the macrobenthic fauna atheavily oil polluted sites (sites 2 and 3) were less two folds than those before oil pollution.Density of Upogebia major increased a little in April, but decreased after April, suggesting thatlong term time monitoring are needed to assess that detailed impact by the oil pollution on thesoft-bottom intertdial macrobenthic community.
