dc.description.abstract An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of the repetitive cycles of different feeding days and feed deprivation on growth and feed consumption of black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegeli (initial mean weight 5.6 g), cultured in floating sea cages. Juvenile black sea bream were stocked into 21 cages at a density of 100 fish per cage and fed a commercial feed to satiation twice a day for 16 weeks. Fish were assigned to one of seven feeding regimes: one group continuously fed to satiation (control) and the other six groups subjected to six different repetitive cycles of 6 : 1 (F6.1), 5 : 1 (F5.1), 4 : 1 (F4.1), 3 : 1 (F3.1), 2 : 1 (F2.1) and 1 : 1 (F1.1) days of satiation feeding : feed deprivation, respectively. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in final body weight, specific growth rate, and feed efficiency between the control, F6.1 and F5.1 at the end of feeding trial. Feed intake of the control was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of the other feeding treatments during the experiment period, but actual feed intake of the control was significantly (P< 0.05) lower than other feeding treatment during real feeding days. Fish subjected to repetitive cycles of F4.1, F3.1, F2.1 and F1.1 were unable to achieve the final body weight equal to that of the control, although feed efficiency of fish in F4.1, F3.1, F2.1 and F1.1 was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of the control fish. These results indicated that an appropriate repetitive cycle of fasting and satiation feeding (i.e., F5.1) could provide the practical feeding regime for black sea bream farmers who want to get economic benefits through reduced feed, labor and economic costs in floating sea cages. -
