dc.description.abstract To assess the short-term dynamices of summer phytoplankton community structure caused by different water masses in a broad region of Southern Sea area of Korea, phytoplankton and environmental factors were monitored from 18 to 20 June 2009.Accroding to multidimensional scaling (MDS) and cluster analysis based on the phytoplankton community of each station, the broad region of Southern Sea was divided into three groups. The first group was the coastal stations of eastern part of Gwangyang Bay including the coastal area of Geogedo, which mainly consisted of diatoms and cryptomonads. The second group was Jeju coastal area including south-western stations of the Korea Strait. The third group was the station of along a line connnected to Gwangyang Bay from Jeju. The second and third groups were comprised mainly dinophyceae and crytophyceae, respectively. Of these, St. 13 and 28 was subject to the formation of temperature fronts caused by different hydrological condition. In particular, nutrients and Chl.a concnetrations in the two stations was significantly higher compared to the other staions, impling that the different water masses have brought phytoplankton population accumulation and triggered the microalgal growth under the high nutrients concentrations. Our results support that phytoplankton community structure may have been influcenced in a short-term scale by different water masses and currents in Southern Sea area of Korea. -
