dc.description.abstract Tintinnids are the best planktonic group as indicators of water mass movements. Tintinnid biogeographic distributions in relation to hydrography are well known in the front between Oyashio and Kuroshio Currents. In order to clarify the temporal influence of Kuroshio intrusion on Korean coastal waters, tintinnids were biweekly or monthly sampled from the western channel of Korea/Tsushima Strait and shoreward waters from the Strait in during recent 4 years. The number of Kuroshio indicative species peaked in early November 2006 and September 2007 and 2008, respectively. Annual maxima of neritic species number were recorded from the shoreward waters in August while no clear peak time from the Korea Strait. Tintinnid species were also analyzed to investigate spatially in tracking the Kuroshio Current from Northwest Pacific central zone to the Korea Strait. Endemic tintinnid species distributed in the central and marginal zone of Northwest Pacific. Petalotrichia ampulla was found in stenochoric Kuroshio while Salpingella acuminata in eurychoric Kuroshio. It is considered that Eiplocyloides ralumensis reported previously as Kuroshio indicative species is originated from East China Sea not from Kuroshio Current because the species was not detected in Northwest Pacific central zone but in East China Sea. Tintinnid species can be applied as a biological sensor to identify mixture of different water masses. Further investigations need to verify the species specific distribution for highly sensitive application. -
