Abstract
The primary purpose of this paper is to quantify how much differences could be occurred by the various tidal conditions on the maximum storm surge heights around the Korean coasts. Along the Korean coasts the tidal ranges vary from less than 1 m to around 9 m. There might be differences of the storm surge depending on tidal conditions. Three typhoons Prapiroon(0012), Rusa(0215), and Maemi(0314) were recorded the maximum surge heights of about 1.1m (in Incheon - slack before flood), 1.2 m (in Yeosu – 1 hour after high tide), and about 2.1m (in Masan - 30 min before high tide), respectively. Numerical experiments were explored to check the variations of the maximum storm surge heights and duration according to various tidal phases (flood-ebb/spring-neap) above three typhoon cases. The results showed the tidal effects on storm surge heights and duration are significant around the Korea coasts. More typhoon simulations can be useful to map the storm surge inundation zone
