dc.description.abstract Using climate model projections from the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR4), changes in the ocean mixed layer depth (MLD) over the North Pacific under global warming are examined. Maximum MLD changes are consistently found near the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension region in all the models examined. The MLDs generally decrease up to 50% by the end of 21st century to the south of the Kuroshio Extension front, and increase to the north of the front. The meridional distribution of the MLD changes closely follows changes in the wind stress, implying that the MLD changes can be primarily attributed to the changes in the wind mixing under global warming. Changes in the wind stress are associated with the northward shift of the surface atmospheric circulation pattern over the North Pacific. The Kuroshio Extension front also shifts northward in response to the wind stress curl shift, which provides an additional factor in understanding the spatial pattern of the MLD changes. These results suggest that changes in the wind stress and ocean circulation, in addition to the intensification of surface stratification due to direct radiative warming, contribute significantly MLD changes in a warming world. -
