dc.description.abstract Although more Korean scientists are becoming interested in IMBER, there is no IMBER project in Korea at the moment. The Korean GLOBEC/IMBER committee is seeking funding opportunities for Korean IMBER projects from the relevant ministries and agencies. The following research proposals will be submitted for funding consideration. ? Forecasting long-term ecosystem changes in the southwestern East Sea: This research will focus on coastal upwelling and stratification processes. Changes of the monsoon will possibly decrease coastal upwelling and hence could alter biogeochemical cycles in the region. Modeling the changes in the food web structure and productivity due to the changes in the coastal upwelling and stratification is the theme.? Changes in the East China Sea Shelf ecosystem: During the last three decades, the warming trend has been pronounced in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea. The Three Gorges Dam has also changed the hydrological and nutrient cycles of the region. The study will focus on the interactive impacts of anthropogenic and climate change on the ecosystem. PICES/FUTURE is one of the contributing projects to IMBER and therefore relevant to IMBER activities in Korea. Korean FUTURE project plans have been developed and now under evaluation of the funding agencies. These include:? The responses of the East Sea Ecosystem to climate change: Monitoring of the north-south transects using sea gliders and other platforms will be conducted. How the circulation processes such as formation of the intermediate water are changing and how it will affect the biogeochemical cycles are the key issues. ? Interactions in the coastal ecosystems. This theme corresponds with FUTURE/AICE and will attempt to assess the human impacts on the coastal ecosystems. It will also assess the feedback impact on human societies. This study will utilize ecological risk analysis, ecosystem statue assessment and socio-economic analysis among others. -
