dc.description.abstract | Despite some efforts to get better estimation of the primary production of the Yellow Sea, there is still uncertainty in the estimates. Extreme range of the environmental factors through seasons makes the estimation difficult. High turbidity caused by strong tidal mixing in the coastal waters makes its light environment very complicated. According to Sherman and Hempel (UNEP LME report, 2009), the primary production of the Yellow Sea (~600 gC m-2 yr-1), based on satellite data, was the third highest among the world LMEs. This estimate is about 3-4 times higher than those based on in-situ study illustrating the uncertainty of the primary production of the Yellow Sea. Here we estimated the primary production using new chlorophyll-a and photosynthetic algorithms. The resultant estimates of the annual primary production of the Yellow Sea fall below 300 gC m-2 yr-1. | - |
