Abstract
The copepod Calanus sinicus, which occupy large portion of zooplankton in terms of biomass in the Yellow Sea, has known to be one from major food items to support the fishery resources in the shelf waters. Understanding dynamics of C. sinicus can be led to the efficient management for sustainable use of fishery resources in the Yellow Sea. Most previous studies conducted in the shelf waters have focused on the spatio-temporal distribution of C. sinicus, especially the diel vertical migration (DVM) and the related environmental factors with habitat characteristics. Food supply and conditions for DVM are known as main factors affecting aggregation of C. sinicus vertically and horizontally. DVM of C. sinicus showed different pattern seasonally in the Inland of Japan. However, the behavior of C. sinicus seems to show contrast pattern according the regional difference within the Yellow Sea Cold Bottom Water (YSCBW) in the same season in the Yellow Sea. YSCBW played major sheltering role of the copepod from the surface waters of lethal thermal range, thus the copepod underwent DVM below the surface layer. However, recent evidences did not show same pattern to the previous results in the Yellow Sea. This implied that dynamics of C. sinicus must be investigated in terms of regional characteristics with environmental factors in the Yellow Sea in summer.
