dc.description.abstract To make macrofaunal habitat potential maps, the spatial distribution of ecological environments in the Hwangdo tidal flat, Korea, was detected and mapped using remote sensing and a geographic information system (GIS) combined with field observations. A frequency ratio model was applied to the mapping of the macrofauna potential area. Ilyoplax dentimerosa, a crustacean species, was considered and seven control factors affecting the tidal macrofauna distribution were selected and used within a spatial database derived from remotely sensed data. The factors included the intertidal digital elevation model (DEM), slope, distance from a tidal channel, tidal channel density, surface sedimentary facies, spectral reflectance of the near infrared (NIR) bands and the tidal exposure duration. The spatial relationships between the species distribution and each control factor were calculated using a frequency ratio. The specie was randomly divided into a training set (70%) to estimate the habitat potential and a test set (30%) to validate the produced habitat map. The relations were overlaid to produce a habitat potential map with a species potential index (SPI) value for each pixel. The potential habitat map was compared with the surveyed habitat locations, and the results show a high level of accuracy (78.96%) between the tidal flat macrofauna potential maps and the existing species object locations. A combination of a GIS-based frequency ratio model and remote sensing with field observations is an effective method to determine those locations favorable for macrofaunal species occurrences in a tidal flat. -
