dc.description.abstract 33km-long Saemangeum dike is one of the longest dikes constructed in the southwest of Korean Peninsula (center location at 126.5E and 35.8N) on 21 April 2006 connecting a few islands, Garyeok, Shinsi, and Yami, and seperates the landward waters of 401km2 from the open waters. After the dike constructed, Saemangeum landward waters with two rivers, Mangyeong and Dongin, records approximately 1m tidal range reduced from 6m which was recorded before the dike completionbecause the opening and closing operation of two sluice gates located at Garyeok and Shinsi islands only provides water exchange between the lake and the coastal waters (Lie et al., 2008). The water quality of the lake is vulnerable to be degraded due to week tidal energy and low mixing rate. An optimized operation of flow control is definitely required to enhance the mixing efficiency improving the water quality as well as keeping the safe water level. As a part of development of Saemangeum operational oceanography Networks (SOON), Saemangeum operational oceanographic system using Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) has been developing with Web-GIS based Saemangeum Coastal Information Network (SCIN) system for Saemangeum waters. This operational oceanographic system focuses on development of operational forecasting system for Saemangeum waters considering sluice gate operation for the prediction of environmental change due to future development of landward waters. -
