dc.description.abstract Coral reef can be a shelter from tropical storm and provide various benefits such as reef fisheries, biodiversity, building materials, etc. However, the global warming has lead to the global decrease in the coral reefs, thus the coral reef habitat can be a good indicator of environmental change in a tropical coastal area. In this study, a WorldView-2 image, a high spatial resolution optical satellite data was applied to the mapping of the coral reef habitat. The investigation was carried out on the Weno island in the Chuuk lagoon of Federated States of Micronesia. A field campaign was performed for collecting real reef habitat data from late January to early February 2010, during which the satellite image was acquired. An object-based classification method, which has been considered to be effective for high spatial resolution satellite images, was employed for the coral reef habitat mapping around the Weno island. The produced habitat map was validated by a comparison with the in-situ observations. -
