dc.description.abstract | In this paper, two energetic NIW events with different vertical structure observed in the same region during September–Octorbor 2005 are presented. Time-varying vertical NIW distributions are investigated using velocity profile measurements from an array of subsurface tall moorings across the Kuroshio equipped with upward-looking acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), McLane moored profiler (MMP), and current meters. Time series of mixed-layer NIW energy input, predicted from observed wind data, suggest that the energy source of the NIW events are from two typhoons that pass over this region before the NIW events start. This study demonstrates that in supplying NIW energy to the deep layers the role of pre-existing anticyclonic circulation is more crucial than the strength of mixed-layer NIW energy generation. | - |
