Abstract
Internal tides and their impacts on the intermediate waters in the East Sea (ES) are investigated using an eddy-resolving Ocean General Circulation Model which can take account of tides as well as oceanic flows simultaneously. The M2 internal tide propagates freely into the interior of the ES from its generation regions. It enhances vertical mixing, and hence creates water-mass characteristics closer to the hydrographic observation. The K1 internal tide, trapped along the coast, induces counterclockwise coastal current. It enhances the southwestward flow along the Russian coast in the upper layer, and hence transports fresh waters with density conducive to the ventilation of intermediate waters in the ES. This study demonstrates that direct inclusion of tides significantly improves the OGCM simulation in the ES.
