dc.description.abstract STORM (Synchronized Typhoon and Ocean Research Model) based on the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) and the GFDL Tropical cyclone model (GFDLT) has been set up and applied to 15 typhoons that occurred from 2004 to 2008 adopting different ocean vertical mixing schemes including K-Profile Parameterization (KPP), Mellor-Yamada (MY) level 2.5 turbulence closure model and NASA Godard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) level 2 scheme. In order to investigate the ocean response to the identical typhoon (same path and intensity) forcing, the initial and boundary conditions in the GFDLT were not changed during the life cycle of the typhoon. However the ocean model was forced by same momentum and heat flux from the GFDLT generated forcing. Generally as the typhoon approaches, the increasing winds produce stronger turbulence resulting in the deepening of the mixed layer as well as the surface cooling. However the effects of the ocean response are different according to the vertical mixing schemes. KPP scheme generates the most coolest and deepest mixed layer. The results of MY and GISS schemes look similar each other. -
