dc.description.abstract | Optically, sea waters can be distinguished between Case-I water and Case-II water. The optical properties ofCASE-I water is determined solely by a phytoplankton and their derivatives. On the other hands, in the CASE-IIwater areas, sediments and a dissolved organic matter make a dominant contribution to the optical properties. Sothis optical type of sea waters can be explained using 3 components diagram of a phytoplankton, a yellowsubstances, and suspended materials. Around the Korean sea areas, there are various optical characteristics of seawaters. Some part is very turbid, some part has very high chlorophyll concentrations, and some sea area is veryclear. According as the chance of sea water characteristics from CASE-I to CASE-II water, the opticalmechanism become more complex. There are two optical processes in the water column, Inherent OpticalProperties (IOPs) and Apparent Optical Properties (AOPs). IOPs are properties that depend only on the water andother substances that are dissolved or suspended in it. IOPs are innate and characteristics for the ocean, andprincipally the same whether it is night or day. AOPs, in contrast, are the properties that depend both on inherentoptical properties and on the light field in which they are measured.
