dc.description.abstract This study investigates oceanic responses to freshwater flux in the Yellow and East China Seas (YECS) using a global ocean general circulation model. First, this study finds that the Changjiang river discharge (CRD) contributes to maintaining warm sea surface in summer. The warming is attributable to the formation of a CRD-induced barrier layer that tends to enhance upper ocean stratifications, and thus reduces both vertical mixing and entrainment cooling. Second, freshwater budget analysis reveals that major freshwater contributors over the YECS change seasonally. Finally, Interannual variability of surface salinity in the YECS is linked to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-related precipitation over east China. These results suggest that understanding responses to freshwater flux in the YECS is crucial to explain variations of surface salinity and temperature in the YECS. -
