dc.description.abstract This study was carried out to understand the distribution characteristics and to compare the temporal change in surface and core sediments of the artificial Lake Shihwa and adjacent coastal area. Due to a large quantity of pollutant discharge from Banweol and Shihwa Industrial Complex, the highest metal contents were found in inner part of the lake nearby Shingil creek. In the adjacent coastal area, high concentrations of heavy metals except for Mn were observed near the dike and LNG terminal. According to metal/Al, Cu, Zn Cd and Hg were highly accumulated in inner part of the lake. Mn/Al ratio, however, was high in far away from the dike. For Co, low level of fluctuation and steady state has been drawn over time. For Cu, Zn, Cd and Hg, fluctuation increased and generally, annual average concentration kept increasing. In the coastal area, the content of Hg in this study was two times higher than those in 2000. The concentrations of Ni, Cu and Zn at St.4 of the lake exceed an ERM limit of NOAA.The vertical distribution of trace metals in sediment cores from an artificial Lake Shihwa of Korea was investigated to evaluate the extent and historical record of metal pollution over 30 years. A markedly increase of trace metals after 1980 was observed due to the operation of two large industrial complexes and dike construction for reclamation project. There was a decreasing trend of metal conc -
