Abstract
- This study investigated the spatial and temporal variation of nutrients and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in the southeastern Yellow Sea in spring 2010 and 2011, and summer from 2009 to 2011. In spring, high Chl-a concentration in the upper layers appeared in the Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW), and joint area among the YSCW, Yellow Sea Warm Water (YSWW) and Korea Coastal Current Water (KCCW) where it was appeared low concentration of nutrients. In summer, nitrate and phosphate was depleted in the upper layer where the Chl-a was showed low concentration. The subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) was usually found within or slightly above the pycnocline. After typhoon in summer 2011, Chl-a concentration showed high concentration in the upper layer as spring bloom, especially from the E1 to E3 stations where it was observed to the YSCW under pycnocline. As a result, the formation of the YSCW, water mass front and tidal front may play an important role for the distribution of nutrients and Chl-a in spring and summer.
