Abstract
Marine microorganisms inhabited in the hydrothermal vent area obtain energy by the oxidation of various gases and/or minerals in the vent fluid. Bacterial and Archaeal community structure of the sediments from two different deep sea mountains, TA22 & TA26, on the Tofua Arc in the Southern Pacific Ocean was investigated by the deep sequencing of 16S rRNA gene partial fragments. Microbial community structure at surface area to the depth of 5 cm was similar in two areas but quite different at the sediments deeper than 5 cm depth. In case of archaea, proportion of sequences showing high similarities with those from hydrothermal vent or deep sea volcano affiliated to the Euryarchaota was high in 5-10 cm depth of TA26 but rarely found in TA22. This result implied that frequency of several microbial phyla or class could be an indicator of the hydrothermal vent fluids.
