Abstract
The northern East China Sea (ECS) occupies an area of 8 by 5 (longitude, latitude) to the east of Shanghai, China, and is a fertile fishing ground. During the summer monsoon the Yangtze River, with the world’s 5th largest runoff, dilutes the sea. As a result the surface salinity within 300 km from the coast typically drops by 4-5 psu and at times by ~9 psu, thus devastating fishery. The South-North Water Transport Project of China diverts the water flow from the Yangze River to the dry northern parts of the country and is due for completion by 2014. The impact of the project on the surface salinity of the ECS is estimated to be an order of 0.2 psu or larger. Since the shallow ECS is not sampled by the Argo floats, it is difficult to provide routine hydrographic measurements over the wide areas in the ECS. This study aims at monitoring the ECS salinity change with the Aquarius data that offer the unique opportunity of continuous mapping.s the sea.
