Abstract
- The bottom cold water mass (YSBCM: ≤ 10°C) is persistently observed in the deep central region of Yellow Sea during the summer when the surface temperature goes up to > 25°C. It may provide over-summering refuge for cold water organisms (such as Calanus sinicus, Euphausia pacifica) to maintain their populations in the Yellow Sea. In order to prove this, we investigated the behavioural (i.e., diel vertical migration - DVM) and physiological shifts (i.e., diet, energy) of Euphausia pacifica between spring (prior to the YSBCM formation) and summer (well developed YSBCM). E pacifica is one of subarctic krill species (their high temperature tolerance = 15°C) and a major food source for fish. In spring, active DVM of E. pacifica was observed throughout the entire water column. However, in the summer, this was limited to the YSBCM, thus enabling them to avoid the high temperature water mass.The results of dietary lipid biomarker and gut content analysis suggest that their diet changed significantly from a dominance of large-sized and chained diatoms in spring to small-sized particles in summer. Therefore, we confirmed that E. pacifica effectively utilize the YSBCM as over-summering refuge through their behavioural adaptation (depth of DVM, diet shift, etc.) without any metabolic changes (diapause, lowering metabolism, etc.).
