Abstract
Recently, effective identification and mapping of coral reef benthic communities using remote sensing satellite have been developed to analyze their spectral characteristics. However, approaching to the accurate classification should deal with various correction steps. Especially in the coral classification research, the radiance and reflectance characteristics of coral reef and seagrass are similar so that classification accuracy is decreased even though using high resolution remote sensing data. In this study, we focused on spectral dissimilarity between coral reef and seagrass using a simple band ratio based classification technique with KOMPSAT-2 images in Weno island, Chuuk lagoon of Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). The proposed spectral differentiation method is the first-order classification way to use spectral radiance including Red, Green, Blue and Near Infrared bands. According to each band characteristic, the combination of band ratio can separate each index of coral reef ecology. In order to verify the classification accuracy, field campaigns were performed to check the coral reef index at 281 sampling points in 2008 and 2011. Furthermore, the same process was applied to the acquired imagery from WorldView-2 satellite. The results demonstrate that the simple spectral classification method is effective to notify an index with raw radiance data from the remote sensing data nal with various correction steps.
