Abstract
Flapping-type turbines have recently been received more attention from the researchers in tidal stream generators, most of which are using rotary turbines such as vertical and horizontal axis turbines. The flapping-type turbine operates under coupling of plunge and pitch motion of a foil. In this work, we investigated the flexibility effect of the foil on power extraction by using two-dimensional CFD simulation. Described chord-wise flexure was given during the flapping motion. Then, power extracted from the flapping foil was compared between rigid and flexible ones. According to the comparison, significant improvement of power extraction could be found in the flexible one. The results from this study can be used in obtaining an optimal design for the flapping-type tidal stream generator. under coupling of plunge and pitch motion of a foil.
