Abstract
The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) has developed an operational search and rescue (SAR) modeling system to predict tracks of victims or debris from aircraft crashes or shipwrecks. The system employs the Leeway drift model which is designed to utilize the wind and surface current fields taken from an operational atmospheric model and 3-dimensional baroclinic ocean model. An important aspect of SAR modeling is the assessment of the uncertainty in the final position of a drifting object. To estimate the uncertainty, drifting buoy experiments are conducted in two remote sites of high frequency (HF) ocean radar, Yeosu and Jeju Strait. The present study will focus on evaluating uncertainty in the search areas for simulated particle trajectories, especially due to uncertainties in the advective velocity measured by HF radar systems.
