dc.description.abstract We investigated biomass of size-fractionated zooplankton in spring and summer 2013 to enhance our knowledge of variation of mesozooplankton biomass in the Yellow Sea. Zooplankton samples were collected at each station with an 60cm diameter closing net (mesh size 200㎛) by vertical tows at different layers (0-10m, 10-20m, 20-40m, 40-60m, 60-80m). Filtered filters were air dried for 24 hours in a dry oven at 60℃. And then, dried filters were weighed using electronic microbalance (Mettler Toledo AG 204). The biomass of all size-fractionated zooplankton groups was generally higher in the surface waters (0-10, 10-20m) in spring than that in summer. The biomass of 1-2㎜, 2-5㎜ and >5㎜ dominated the total biomass of mesozooplankton at nearly all stations in spring. From the five depths, the total biomass of mesozooplankton dominated mainly in the surface waters (0-10m), but the highest biomass was observed at the depth of 40-70m in the station EO1. In summer, biomass of 200-500㎛ and 500㎛-1㎜ dominated relatively the total biomass of mesozooplankton at each depth. The biomass of 2-5㎜ dominated at the low depths of 20-40m and 40-60m at the stations of DO6, EO1 and EO3, where adults and immatures of Euphausia pacifica is main species. From the comparison of biomass between spring and summer, effect of stratification was not clearly found from the vertical distribution in biomass of size-fractionated zooplankton.
