dc.description.abstract This paper presents a research about the change of structural characteristics of steel cable-stayed bridges which suffer cable breaking. Cables, considered as the intermediate supports for girder of cable-stayed bridges, can be broken by clash accident, fire, fatigue fracture, and so on. This intermediate support loss can lead change of internal force distribution of main members and reduction of the ultimate capacity because of girder-cable-mast interaction. In order to study about the effect of the cable-breaking, cable-breaking analysis method is suggested in this paper based on the theory of nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, the ultimate analysis method is also suggested for estimate the ultimate capacity of the cable-stayed bridges after cable breaking. Performing suggested analyses, the effect of cable breaking and the change of ultimate capacity after cable breaking were investigated considering various cable-breaking situations. In this study, fan-type cable stayed bridge was adopted as the analysis model. As performing the cable breaking analysis, the change of internal force distribution after individual cable breaking was studied. And then, the characteristics of ultimate capacity reduction were investigated with respect to various breaking situations.y clash accident, fire, fatigue fracture, and so on.
