Abstract
Application of the classical logarithmic layer velocity to ocean BBL usually leads to an overestimation of friction velocity. To gain further insights, we utilized 270 16-min averaged ADCP velocity profiles obtained from a bottom mooring in the East China Sea. The single and double log-layer models as well as the log-wake model and a modified due to stratification log-layer model (MLL) were explored. Although the first tree models fit well the majority of the profiles, the corresponding friction velocities appeared to be substantially overestimated, leading to unreasonably high values of drag coefficient Cd ~ 0.01-0.02. On the other hand, the friction velocities inferred from a modified MLL model led to the estimates of drag coefficient in the range 0.0028 – 0.0032 this is close to a traditional Cd = 0.0025.
