dc.description.abstract | The toxicity of crude oil and the clean-up operation decreased the biodiversity of the rocky intertidal ecosystem after the Hebei Spirit oil spill in the coastal areas of Tae-an, Korea. We showed that the recruitment and growth of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) are critical to the recovery of the rocky shore ecosystem. We aimed to understand the ecological roles of oysters in natural and culture sites and obtained information about the early settlement patterns and growth of oysters. To investigate the recruitment, mortality, and growth of oysters, we conducted image analysis on a monthly basis between July 2012 and January 2013 and monitored the same individuals. The abundance of young oysters was greater at the natural site than at the culture site. However, the length of oysters at the culture site increased at more than double the rate of that at the natural site. The abundance of oysters at the natural site increased until September and has continually decreased to date. However, the abundance of oysters in the culture site constantly decreased after recruitment. These different patterns result from spatial competition between oysters and the barnacle (Balanus albicostatus).
