dc.description.abstract The Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) has some of the warmest sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of the world’s oceans. This region greatly influences seasonal and decadal variability of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and climate anomalies such as the El Ni&ntilde o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Chuuk Atoll, located in the Federated States of Micronesia, is positioned in the center of the WPWP. Using coral cores collected from the outer- and inner-atoll, preliminary stable isotope and trace metal analyses indicate the sites are hydrologically distinct. The outer-atoll core will create a record of changes in SSTs and precipitation in the WPWP, while the inner-atoll site will provide a record of changes in the position of the ITCZ over the past several decades. These reconstructions afford some insight into the complex ocean-atmosphere systems and allow for more accurate climate modeling and predictions.omalies such as the El Ni&ntilde o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
