dc.description.abstract | The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of the water surface owing to tides results in a strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by using tidal current turbines. This study evaluated the possibility of commercial tidal current power plant on Uldolmok channel located at the southwest coast of Korea. The preliminary data including tide, wave and water depth was investigated on the basis of literature investigation and field survey. For the basic design of tidal current power plant, arrangement of turbines, plant structure type, entry bridge, shield system, and so on were outlined. The facility capacity of Uldolmok channel was designed as 14.5 MW. The economic analysis showed the benefit to cost (B/C) ratio of 0.757. Including the sightseeing advantage, the B/C ratio increased to 1.116l current turbines.
