New record of Quadrellin crab (Crustacea: Decapoda: Trapezoidea) from Korea

Abstract

Trapezoid crabs are obligate associates of cnidarians. The members of the genus Trapezia are the best known in the superfamily, but relatively the species of the genus Quadrella are rarely recorded and known in Indo-West Pacific. They live on the alcyonaceans, antipatharians, and ahermatypic scleracinian corals. Quadrella maculosa Alcock, 1898 is newly reported from Korean waters as a result of continous taxonomic studies on crabs. The examined specimen are collected by SCUBA diving at depth 25 metrein Jejudo Island. Quadrella maculosa has armed teeth on the anterior margin of the cheiped merus, relatively long length of merus, spinosed epibranchial tooth, and two spines on the carpus. In Korea, the members of the trapezoid crabs have not been recorded.
