dc.description.abstract The seasonal cycle and magnitude of marine primary production (PP) is projected to change in response to climate change. It is likely that the changes in PP will also influence the structure and dynamic of the marine ecosystem and food web interaction. Studies have shown that the global PP appears to have decreased over the past several decades. Especially, recent global prediction models have indicated that the PP is expected to decrease in the mid-latitudinal marginal seas (Laufk&ouml tter et al 2015 Hollowed et al., 2015). However, the challenges in understanding and predicting PP in response to climate change is quite complex in these regions. In particular, the upper mixed layer and SCM which are most variable and active part of the marine habitats, characterized by high phytoplankton biomass and production. In this study, we examined the determinants of the SCM variability in East Sea (ES), Yellow Sea (YS), and East China Sea (ECS). We conducted analysis on the vertical profiles of PP using in-situ data of oceanographic variables at more than 200 stations in ES, YS and ECS from 1993-2010. Our results show that the depth of SCM layers highly correlates with MLD, SCM being formed at the base of the thermocline. For example, in the Yellow Sea, the relationship was SCM depth=1.2279*MLD+8.4653 (R²=0.6752) from 1993-1999. As global warming continues, stratification will be strengthened which will alter the deptinteraction. -
