Abstract
As commercialization of tidal current energy is close to come true, tidal current energy is globally researched. Especially many researches have been conducted on Horizontal axis tidal current turbine (HAT) because HAT has many advantagesas compared with other type tidal current turbines. In this study, we investigate the effect of blade pitch control of HAT with a pitch drive system. The purpose of the pitch control is to make structure of turbine stable and to maintain power of turbine around the rated power by controlling the rotational speed of turbine. The pitch controller of HAT is designed by a control method using turbine parameters and is integrated into a pitch control software. A servo motor is selected by calculating blade pitching moment and is installed in the turbine hub in fabricating the blade pitch drive system. Experiments of pitch control for a prototype up to 20kW are conducted with a PMSG generator to observe how the power of the prototype is generated while pitch controller is operated. Through experiments of pitch control, pitch angle of the blades is changed according to the change of the flow speed and as a result, rotational speed of turbine is well maintained in in-situ condition. Furthermore, the thrust of the turbine is well maintained even though the flow speed increases.s compared with other type tidal current turbines.
