Abstract
Recently, one type of renewable energy is a horizontal axis tidal current turbine, which is the flow of seawater due to the interaction between the earth and the moon. The flow speed with the offshore condition is increased and decreased according to the constant cycle. Therefore, it is important that control is necessary for safe operation. This study shows the power generation and its regulating control of the horizontal axis tidal current turbine through outdoor experiment. To regulate power, we adopted a pitch control method in a broad range of the flow speed from 1 to 4 m/s. The horizontal axis tidal current turbine with variable pitch is fabricated, which is consists of three blades and 2.4 m of diameter. As a result, the developed pitch controller successfully regulated the rotational speed within 80±8 rev/min. The extracted power was also maintained within 6.73±0.55 kW. Moreover, a thrust force, which is an impulsive load to the horizontal tidal current turbine and its supporting frame, was stayed from 10.5 to 7.1 kN. Eventually, the power generation and control for a 200 kW horizontal tidal current turbine will be applied based on the results of the outdoor experiment.cording to the constant cycle.
