Abstract
Typhoon Chaba in 2016 was the second strongest typhoon to make landfall in Korea since 1904 and the strongest October typhoon to hit Korea. The tropical storm left severe damage across the southern parts of South Korea, causing seven deaths and damages of US$18.3 million. Strong wind of up to 49m/s was recorded at Jeju island and widespread heavy rainfall was observed across southern Korea with local amounts over 250mm resulting flooding especially in southeastern port cities of Busan and Ulsan. Marine city nearby Haeundae beach, the most famous beach in Korea, is a newly developed residential area by reclamation with high-rise apartment complex in eastern Busan. The city was flooded by effect of both high waves and higher sea water levels due to storm surge caused by Typhoon Chaba. When the center of Typhoon Chaba passed across Busan, the event was to occur close to high tide resulting in heavy rainfall and coastal flooding. Coast of the city is protected by seawall with concrete blocks located at the mouth of Suyeong river. Because of its geomorphologic features, Marine city is frequently subject to inundation and therefore it is needed to analyze the city’s flooding cause and threatening for future storms. In this paper, we investigate the inundation of Marine city by overtopping waves during passage of Typhoon Chaba using a numerical model. Numerical results are presented and compared with available observed fie and damages of US$18.3 million.
