Abstract
The east coast of Korea has dramatically experienced swell-like waves that have caused loss of human life and property damages in recent years. The swell-like waves are often occurred regardless of weather conditions over the coastal region because they originated from central or eastern East Sea (Oh et al, 2010). For the reason, it is difficult to predict the onset time of the waves and they have done much damage to the coastal area. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of swell-like waves clearly and to build a safety system for prevention of disaster. In this study, we examined characteristics of these waves using observation results and reanalysis data, also we developed a forecast system that aimed the east coast of Korea including data assimilation technique. because they originated from central or eastern East Sea (Oh et al, 2010).
