dc.description.abstract The sea around the Korea Peninsula, particularly the East China Sea where Jeju is located, is one of the fastest warming areas in the world over the last 30 years. At the same time, atmospheric deposition has increased continuously over the Northwestern Pacific region for the same time frame. On a local scale, increased human activities, coupled with growth in tourism, are leading to local environmental pollution in Jeju. Here we review these issues with an introduction to aresearch project we are doing at KIOST Jeju Research Center to assess the eutrophication process in the inshore waters of Jeju. Our preliminary results off the coast of Handong (in the northeast Jeju) indicate that C and N are accumulating, and that the coastal pollution is likely to worsen in the future.
