dc.description.abstract Rip currents are wave-induced, strong and narrow currents flowing away from shore beyond the zones of breaking waves. They can occur at any beach with breaking waves and have been often found at Haeundae beach, the most famous beach and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Korea. Lifeguards at the beach rescue tens of people from rip currents every year which provides the motivation to keep doing researches on nearshore circulation in the beach. Fully nonlinear Boussinesq model with effect of wave breaking has been used to investigate wave-induced circulation inside surf zone. FUNWAVE-TVD, fully nonlinear Boussinesq model, devised by Shi et al. (2012) has been shown to be able to simulate wave breaking and wave-induced nearshore circulation. In the model, wave breaking is handled switching locally to the nonlinear shallow water equations at cells where the Froude number exceeds a preset threshold. In this paper, we present a revised version of FUNWAVE-TVD in which some dispersive terms are corrected. Numerical results of nearshore circulation at Haeundae beach are presented and discussed. of the most popular tourist attractions in Korea.
