Abstract
To understand ocean phenomena, it is necessary to acquire information through observation of various ocean factors, and tidal current and depth are one of the basic ones. The tidal current is mainly observed by fixing the observation equipment on the sea floor or attaching the observation equipment to the vessel. The water depth is collected by moving the vessel at a certain interval by mounting the sonar. However, these methods have considerable limitations in ship operation, equipment installation and maintenance in areas where strong current rates such as udolmok, shallow tidal flats (or breakwater), and coastal areas of northern Gyeonggi Bay are restricted access. Meanwhile, Echo-buoy, developed by KIOST, is a device that can acquire data from a remote location by simultaneously measuring the tidal current and depth by real time using GPS, echo sounder and CDMA sensor. In this study, Echo-buoy was operated at Uldurmok where the strongest current rate was generated in Korea, and tidal current and depth were observed. As a result, characteristics of flow velocity and depth of udolmok were obtained.ent on the sea floor or attaching the observation equipment to the vessel.
