dc.description.abstract The extreme climate, which is outside of the mean state, can give severe damage to the earth ecosystem. The frequency and intensity of the extreme climate significant increases due to the global warming. Heatwave that is one of the extremephenomena on land can be fatal to humans and wildlife and destroy crops and forests. In addition, heatwaves can also occur in the ocean and these are known as Marine Heatwaves (MHW). This study shows the long-term variability of satellite-detected MHW events over Northeast Asia seas. Multi-decadal record of the frequency, duration, and intensity of MH events are constructed based on 90th percentile thresholds of NOAA satellite Optimal Interpolated sea surface temperature (SST) values from 1982 to 2018. We identified significant increasing trends in Northeastern MH duration by 2.68 and 3.11 days per 10 years over the South Sea and the Northern East Sea. We confirm the ocean and atmospheric modes that cause MHvariability. The ocean mode has a positive trend related to global warming. The ocean mode has a positive trend related to global warming and the atmospheric mode is correlated with the anti-cyclone pattern. -
